Math editor

L'Math ships with the Abitti math editor. Use it to write math using LaTeX syntax.

Creating and editing a formula

Add a new math formula by clicking on 'Add formula', or with the shortcut Ctrl+E.

You'll see a math editor box appear, like in the image below. If you wish to hide the right part, which shows the LaTeX code, click on the button when in text mode.

Use the left box to write mathematical experssions. When the math editor is active, you will see a set of formula tools in the toolbar (see below). Add a formula or symbol by clicking on it.

Click on the button to expand the special symbol view. These symbols can also be inserted in regular text mode.

Closing and re-entering the math editor

When you're done with your formula, click outside the math editor, or press Esc to exit the math editor. If you press Enter, you will create a new formula below the current one.

When you exit the math editor, your formula will re-appear with a dim dashed border. By clicking on a formula, you may edit it again.

Keyboard commands and shortcuts

Adding special characters from the toolbar buttons is not very fast in the end. Therefore, it is useful to learn some LaTeX commands and shortcuts to make writing mathematical text more fluent.

You do not need to switch to the right LaTeX code box to use shortcuts, but you can use them directly in the left box.

* multiplication symbol
/ fraction/division
^ superscript (exponent)
_ subscript
\sqrt square root*
\int integral*
\bar vector line*
\pm plus-minus*
\infty infinity*

(*) Remember to press the spacebar after typing the command!

 Tip

When you are in the math editor, hover over a formula or special character in the toolbar to see the LaTeX command for it!

Tables and matrices

In the math editor, you can also create small tables and matrices. You can conveniently move within these using the arrow keys. Additionally, you can create a new row with Enter, and a new column with the Tab key.

Colours in formulas

In L'Math, you can add colours to formulas. The text color is by default also the color of the formula text, but you can enable other colors in formula mode via the palette icon on the right side of the toolbar.

You can either highlight the part of the formula to be colored and click the color, or click the color first and then write the formula content in the color box.

Extra symbols

The extra symbol menu on the right side of the formula toolbar contains some symbols that are missing from the Abitti formula editor but are used, for example, in university mathematics.

You can add any of the extra symbols or brackets by clicking on it.
